TUTORING PHILOSOPHY
Quality tutoring demands more than just academic expertise on the part of the tutor. Developing a warm, positive relationship with the student, without fostering dependency, is the key to establishing a foundation for learning. Providing the student with clear structure and technique for how to approach challenging material is the art of tutoring. By stimulating the learning process, the tutor is able to help the student gain the self awareness (metacognitive skills) needed to succeed in applying strategies independently.
ATAC tutors focus on identifying the student's strengths. By utilizing strengths while addressing the areas that need attention, tutors are able to boost the student's motivation to learn and to enjoy tackling challenges.
Our focus is on the total learning process, rather than solely on deficits. Students work with tutors on a voluntary basis, and are actively involved in their own tutoring program. Current assignments are addressed while students gain transferable skills. Students are encouraged to set attainable goals, and to work towards meeting them.
